Mencía

About this grape variety

A native red grape of northwest Spain (Bierzo, Valdeorras, Ribeira Sacra), Mencía produces aromatic, fresh, slightly mineral red wines with bright red-cherry, herbal and floral notes. The grape thrives on slate and granite soils and at altitude, where it expresses a transparent, Atlantic-influenced profile — sometimes compared to lighter Burgundy. Same grape as Portugal's Jaen, with which it shares a renewed reputation.
