Tannat

About this grape variety

A thick-skinned, deeply tannic red grape, Tannat is the dominant variety of Madiran in southwest France and the signature grape of Uruguay. The wines are dark, powerful, heavily tannic and ageworthy — sometimes softened by micro-oxygenation (a technique invented in Madiran). Uruguay's coastal vineyards produce a less austere style. Worth knowing for its health-positive polyphenol content as much as its uncompromising structure.
