Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—known colloquially as the “Real Vinícola”—caused a great confusion at its inception between the new and the old Royal Wine Company of Porto. Through popular speech and commercial slang, the Pombalina Real Companhia, founded in 1756, began to be known as “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted that designation as its trade name. The centenary Real Vinícola, created under the auspices of the Marquis of Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial entity and was acquired by the well‑known Fladgate Partnership, owners of major port brands such as Taylor’s.
