Founded in 1756 by the Marquis of Pombal to regulate the Port trade, Real Companhia Velha is the oldest Port wine company still in operation and one of the Douro's most important historic houses. Quinta de Cidrô in São João da Pesqueira is its wine-tourism centre: tours of the historic winery, tastings of the Carvalhas and Evel ranges, and the celebrated Royal Oporto Ports aged in the Vila Nova de Gaia lodges.
