Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—colloquially known as the “Real Vinícola”—initially sparked confusion between the two Real Companies, the new and the old Real Companhia dos Vinhos do Porto. Through popular vernacular and commercial slang, the Pombalina Real Companhia, founded in 1756, came to be known as “Real Companhia Velha,” adopting the name as its trade mark. The centenary Real Vinícola, created under the patronage of the Marquês de Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial society before being acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owners of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
