It is said that Madeira wine’s chief mentor was Prince Henry the Navigator, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape—originally from Candia in Crete—on the island of Madeira, a venture that proved a success. By the mid‑15th century Madeira wine was already being exported, with routes that included Europe, where it was prized for its refinement and even used as perfume for the ladies’ handkerchiefs at court. The prestige of this nectar was such that references to it abound in history, the arts, and the legends of various nations. The year of bottling may not match the image shown.
