Legend has it that the principal patron of Madeira wine was Prince D. Henrique, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape—originally from Candia in Crete—on Madeira island, a venture that proved successful. By the mid‑15th century, Madeira wine was already being exported along routes that reached Europe, where it was regarded as a refined delicacy and even used as perfume for the court ladies’ handkerchiefs. The prestige of this nectar was such that references to it abound in history, the arts, and the legends of various nations. The bottling year may not correspond to the image shown.
