It is said that Prince D. Henrique was the chief mentor of Madeira wine, encouraging the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape—originating from Candia in Crete—on the island of Madeira, a venture that proved successful. By the mid‑15th century, Madeira wine was already being exported, with trade routes that included Europe, where it was prized for its refinement and even used as perfume for the court ladies’ scarves.
