Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—known colloquially as the “Real Vinícola”—created a great confusion between the two Royal Companies, the new and the old Real Companhia dos Vinhos do Porto. It was through the people’s voice and commercial slang that the Pombalina Real Companhia, founded in 1756, began to be called “Real Companhia Velha” and to use that name as a brand. The century‑old Real Vinícola, established under the patronage of the Marquês de Pombal, became over the years a purely patrimonial society, eventually acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
