Founded in 1889, the Royal Wine Company of Northern Portugal—known colloquially as the “Royal Winery”—caused a great confusion at its inception between the new and the old Royal Companies of Porto Wines. It was through popular speech and commercial slang that the Pombal Royal Company, established in 1756, began to be called the “Old Royal Company” and to use that name as a trademark. The century‑old Royal Winery, created under the patronage of the Marquess of Pombal, later became a purely patrimonial entity, eventually acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owners of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
