Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—known by locals as the “Real Vinícola”—caused great confusion at its inception, as people mixed it up with the two Royal Companies: the new and the old Real Company of Port Wine. It was through popular and commercial vernacular that the Pombaline Real Company, founded in 1756, began to be called “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted that name as a brand. The century‑old Real Vinícola, created under the auspices of the Marquess of Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial society and was acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owners of major Port brands such as Taylor’s.
