Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—commonly referred to by locals as the “Real Vinícola”—sparked a huge confusion at its inception between the new Royal Company and the Old Royal Company of Porto Wines. It was through popular usage and commercial vernacular that the Pombaline Real Companhia, founded in 1756, began to be called “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted the name as its trade mark. The century‑old Real Vinícola, created under the auspices of the Marquês de Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial entity and was acquired by the well‑known Fladgate Partnership, owners of prominent Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
