It is said that the wine of Madeira had Infante D. Henrique as its chief mentor, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape—originally from Candia in Crete—on the island, a venture that proved to be a success. By the mid‑15th century, Madeira wine was already being exported, with trade routes reaching Europe, where it was considered a refined beverage and even used as perfume for the ladies’ gloves at court.
