It is said that the wine of Madeira had Infante D. Henrique as its chief mentor, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape—originally from Candia in Crete—on the island, a venture that proved to be a success. By the mid‑15th century, Madeira wine was already being exported, with trade routes reaching Europe, where it was considered a refined beverage and even used as perfume for the ladies’ gloves at court. The prestige of this nectar was such that references to it are not uncommon in history, the arts, and the legends of various nations. The year of bottling may not correspond to the image shown.
