The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports appearing 25 years later. On Madeira, vines are grown in small earth plots called “poios,” supported by earth walls on mountain slopes that are often difficult to reach. The island’s unique soil and climate, together with the production process and the grape varieties cultivated, have given Madeira wine its unrivaled distinction over time. In addition to these factors, there are 30 grape varieties used for this fortified wine, the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho, and Malvasia. The vintage may not match the image shown.
