Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—commonly called the “Real Vinícola” in popular slang—created a great mix‑up at its inception, confusing the new company with the older Real Companhia dos Vinhos do Porto. Over time, through the people’s voice and commercial jargon, the Pombalina Real Companhia, established in 1756, began to be known as “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted that name as its brand. The century‑old Real Vinícola, created under the patronage of the Marquis of Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial company and was acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, the owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
