Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal – colloquially known by locals as the “Real Vinícola” – sparked a great confusion at its inception between the two Royal Companies, the new and the old Real Companhia dos Vinhos do Porto. It is through popular usage and commercial slang that the Pombaline Real Companhia, founded in 1756, began to be called “Real Companhia Velha” and to use that designation as a trademark. The centenary Real Vinícola, created under the auspices of the Marquis of Pombal, became over the years a purely patrimonial society and was later acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
