Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—known colloquially as the “Real Vinícola”—created a great deal of confusion at its inception between the two Royal Companies, the new and the old Real Companhia dos Vinhos do Porto. Through the voice of the people and commercial slang, the 1756‑founded Pombalina Real Companhia began to be known as “Real Companhia Velha” and to use that designation as a commercial brand. The century‑old Real Vinícola, established under the auspices of the Marquês de Pombal, gradually became a purely patrimonial society and was later acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
