Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—known colloquially as the “Real Vinícola”—created a great confusion at its inception between the two Royal Companies: the new and the old Real Companhia dos Vinhos do Porto. Through popular usage and commercial slang, the Pombaline Real Companhia, founded in 1756, began to be known as “Real Companhia Velha” and to use that name as its trade mark. The century‑old Real Vinícola, created under the patronage of the Marquis of Pombal, eventually became a mere holding company and was acquired by the well‑known Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
