Founded in 1889, the Royal Wine Company of Northern Portugal—known among locals as the “Real Vinícola”—caused a great deal of confusion at its birth, as it was mixed up with the two Royal Companies: the new and the old Royal Company of Porto Wines. Through popular slang and commercial parlance, the Pombal-era Royal Company, founded in 1756, began to be called the “Old Royal Company” and adopted that name as its brand. The centennial Royal Winery, created under the patronage of the Marquis of Pombal, gradually became merely a patrimonial society and was later acquired by the well‑known Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
