Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola of Northern Portugal—known colloquially as the “Real Vinícola”—created a great confusion at its inception, pitting the new Royal Company against the old Real Companhia dos Vinhos do Porto. Through popular speech and commercial slang, the Pombalina Real Companhia, founded in 1756, came to be called the “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted that name as a brand. The centenary Real Vinícola, created under the patronage of the Marquis of Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial society and was acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
