Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal – known colloquially as the “Real Vinícola” – caused a stir at its inception, confusing it with the two Royal Companies, the new and the old Royal Company of Porto Wine. Through popular press and commercial slang the Pombalina Real Companhia, founded in 1756, began to be called the “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted that name as a brand. The century‑old Real Vinícola, established under the patronage of the Marquess of Pombal, eventually became merely a heritage company, later acquired by the well‑known Fladgate Partnership, owners of major port brands such as Taylor’s.
