Founded in 1889, the Royal Winery of Northern Portugal—colloquially called “Real Vinícola”—caused a great confusion at its inception between the two Royal Companies: the new and the old Royal Company of Port Wines. Through popular usage and commercial slang, the Pombal‑era Royal Company, founded in 1756, began to be known as “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted that name as its commercial brand. The century‑old Royal Winery, created under the auspices of the Marquess of Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial entity and was acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port brands such as Taylor’s.
