Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola of Northern Portugal, known colloquially as “Real Vinícola,” caused a great confusion at its inception between the two Royal Companies: the new and the old Royal Company of Porto Wine. Through popular usage and commercial slang, the Pombaline Real Companhia founded in 1756 began to be called “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted this designation as a trade name. The century‑old Real Vinícola, established under the patronage of the Marquis of Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial society and was acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owners of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
