Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal, known colloquially among the people as the "Real Vinícola," caused, upon its creation, considerable confusion between the two Royal Companies: the new one and the Old Royal Company of the Port Wines. It was through the voice of the people and commercial slang that the Pombaline Real Companhia, founded in 1756, came to be known as the "Real Companhia Velha," a name it adopted as a trademark. The centenary Real Vinícola, established under the auspices of the Marquis of Pombal, became over the years a merely patrimonial society and was acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor's.
