The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the discovery of the island that gives it its name, with records of the first productions and exports 25 years after its discovery. On Madeira, vineyards are cultivated in small earth plots known as “poios,” supported by earth walls on steep mountain slopes that are often difficult to access. The island’s unique soil and climate, along with the production process and grape varieties grown, have contributed to Madeira wine’s unparalleled distinction over time. In addition to these factors, 30 grape varieties are used to produce this fortified wine, with the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho, and Malvasia.
