For 200 years, Blandy’s Madeira has been synonymous with quality Madeira wine. Blandy, the sole family among all the founders of the Madeira wine trade still owning and running its original company, has played a key role in the wine’s development, and its members continue to live on the island, preserving a tradition that dates back to 1811. The Madeira Wine Company began as an association of several Madeira wine producers who joined forces in 1913 to strengthen purchasing and production. During periods of discord, the old family companies of Blandy and Leacock merged, followed by the acquisition of Miles and Cossart Gordon, creating the largest producer and exporter of Madeira wine. Maintaining the unique character and style of each company was central to the association’s mission. By the late 1970s, ownership of the company had narrowed to a handful of the original families, with Blandy holding the controlling share. In 1989, seeking to boost sales and marketing, Blandy invited the Symington family from Porto to partner, a collaboration that endures today and keeps the Madeira Wine Company at the forefront of the trade.
