Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—known colloquially as “Real Vinícola”—created a great deal of confusion at its inception between the two Royal Companies: the new one and the old Royal Company of Port Wine. Through the voice of the people and commercial slang, the Pombalina Real Companhia, founded in 1756, began to be called “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted that designation as its trade name. The centennial Real Vinícola, established under the patronage of the Marquês de Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial company and was acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
