Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—colloquially known as the “Real Vinícola”—caused a great confusion at its inception between the two Royal Companies: the new and the old Royal Wine Company of Porto. It was through the people's voice and commercial slang that the Pombaline Real Companhia, founded in 1756, began to be called “Real Companhia Velha” and to use that designation as a trade name. The century‑old Real Vinícola, created under the auspices of the Marquess of Pombal, gradually became a purely patrimonial company and was acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
