Founded in 1889, the Royal Wine Company of North Portugal, known colloquially as the “Real Vinícola,” caused a great deal of confusion at its inception between the two Royal Companies—the new one and the Old Royal Company of Port Wine. And through popular speech and commercial slang, the Pombal Real Company founded in 1756 began to be known as the “Old Royal Company” and used that designation as a trade name. The century‑old Real Vinícola, created under the auspices of the Marquess of Pombal, gradually became a purely patrimonial society and was later acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, which owns major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
