Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal, known colloquially among the people as the "Real Vinícola," caused, upon its creation, considerable confusion between the two Royal Companies: the new one and the Old Royal Company of the Port Wines. It is through the voice of the people and commercial slang that the Pombaline Real Companhia, founded in 1756, came to be known as the "Real Companhia Velha," and began to use this designation as a trademark. The centenarian Real Vinícola, created under the auspices of the Marquis of Pombal, became over the years a purely heritage-based society, and was subsequently acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor's.
