Founded in 1889, Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal – known to locals as the “Real Vinícola” – caused great confusion at its inception, as it was mistaken for the older Royal Company of Porto Wine. Over time, through popular usage and commercial branding, the Pombaline company founded in 1756 began to be called “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted that name as its trade mark. The century‑old Real Vinícola, created under the patronage of the Marquess of Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial entity and was acquired by the well‑known Fladgate Partnership, which owns major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
