Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal, known colloquially as the "Real Vinícola," caused considerable confusion upon its creation between the two Royal Companies: the new one and the Old Royal Company of Port Wines. It is through the voice of the people and commercial slang that the Pombaline Royal Company, founded in 1756, came to be known as the "Real Companhia Velha" and began using this designation as a trademark. The centenary Real Vinícola, established under the auspices of the Marquis of Pombal, became over the years a purely patrimonial company and was acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor's.
