The history of Favaios is shrouded in time. Its name derives from “Flávius,” an ancient Roman settlement that once belonged to the land of Panoías. Its development has followed successive dynasties. Since 1952, in this village of the Demarcated Douro Region, the Favaios Cooperative Winery has become one of the country’s largest and most renowned, especially celebrated for the unmistakable quality of its Aperitivo and Moscatel de Favaios. The growth of the village owes much to wine, which has played a major role in the local economy and in the architecture. Aware of the rising market demands and the internal shortcomings typical of facilities dating back to 1952, the Favaios Winery chose to invest in modernising and revitalising the infrastructure of the cooperative, which now boasts more than 550 members.
