Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—commonly referred to by locals as the “Real Vinícola”—caused a great deal of confusion at its inception between the two Royal Companies: the new and the old Royal Company of Port Wine. It was through the voice of the people and popular commercial jargon that the Pombalina Royal Company, established in 1756, began to be called the “Old Royal Company” and adopted that name as its trademark. The century‑old Royal Winery, founded under the auspices of the Marquis of Pombal, gradually became a purely patrimonial entity and was later acquired by the well‑known Fladgate Partnership, owners of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
