The name José Maria da Fonseca is closely linked to Moscatel de Setúbal, to the point of almost becoming a synonym for this great wine that springs from the Setúbal region. In truth, some of the world’s best moscatels are born within this ancient family company. José Maria da Fonseca was founded in 1834 by its namesake, José Maria da Fonseca, who had just finished his studies in mathematics at the University of Coimbra. He established the company, and fifteen years later, in 1849, the Moscatel de Setúbal brand was born. Though JMF is chiefly known for its outstanding Moscatels, it has also created timeless table‑wine brands such as Periquita (launched in 1850) and Lancers (introduced in 1944). JMF’s moscatels are rare relics released in limited quantities, making them a must‑stop. The oldest moscatels in the region belong exclusively to this company and are utterly unforgettable, standing shoulder‑to‑shoulder with the world’s best fortified wines such as Port and Madeira.
