The Tokaj region, Tokaj‑Hegyalja, lies in a mountain range in northeastern Hungary. The town of Tolcsva and the Oremus cellars sit at the geographic heart of this area. In 2002, UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee recognized Tokaj’s exceptional winemaking conditions, its centuries‑old cultural influence, and its value, granting it World Heritage status. In 1993, just three years after the fall of communism, the Alvarez family turned to Hungary and founded Tokaj‑Oremus Vineyards and Wineries. The estate’s activities are mainly based in Tolcsva, where a modern winery was built in 1999 and linked to the labyrinth of cellars that have existed there since the 13th century. Thus, the Alvarez family placed great emphasis on a respectful, detailed study of this wine to establish its production process and history. (illustrative image only)
