Fonseca Guimaraens 2008 displays a very deep purple-black colour with violet highlights. The first impression on the nose is an explosion of blackberries, cassis, strawberries and forest fruits. These exuberant berry aromas are seasoned with notes of coffee, molasses and spices, and wrapped in a fragrant balsamic aura of rosemary flower and mint. The palate is structured around a closed, tight texture of tannins. The finish is long, with flavours of ripe berry fruits. Walnuts are an excellent accompaniment to this Vintage, as are blue cheeses and other strong-flavoured cheeses. Dried fruits such as apricots and figs also pair very well. Fonseca has been part of the first category of Vintage Port producers since the mid-19th century. Fonseca Vintage Ports are known for their exuberant fruitiness, which develops great opulence and complexity with age. Their wines appeal to the enthusiast and the connoisseur perhaps more than the Vintage Ports of any other house, because they are the product of inspired winemaking and a profound knowledge of viticulture and terroir.
