The Tokaj region, Tokaj‑Hegyalja, is situated in a mountain range in north‑eastern Hungary. The town of Tolcsva and the Oremus cellars lie at the geographic centre of the area. In 2002, UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee recognised Tokaj’s exceptional winemaking conditions, its centuries‑long cultural influence, and granted it World Heritage status. In 1993, just three years after the fall of communism, the Alvarez family turned to Hungary and founded Tokaj‑Oremus Viñedos y Bodegas. The estate’s activities are mainly based in Tolcsva, where a modern cellar was built in 1999 and linked to the labyrinth of cellars that have existed there since the 13th century. Thus the Alvarez family placed great emphasis on the respectful, detailed study of this wine to establish its production process and history. (Illustrative image only)
