For 200 years, Blandy's Madeira has been synonymous with quality Madeira wine. Blandy is the only family among all the founders of the Madeira wine trade still owning and running its original Madeira wine company, and its members continue to live on Madeira, preserving a tradition that dates back to 1811. The Madeira Wine Company was originally an association of several Madeira wine producers who joined forces to strengthen their purchasing and production capabilities. Founded in 1913, the group saw the old family companies of Blandy's and Leacock merge during a period of discord, followed shortly by the dispute over Miles and Cossart Gordon, thereby creating the largest producer and exporter of Madeira wine. Maintaining the unique characteristics and style of each individual company remained the association’s focus. By the late 1970s, the company’s interests had been reduced to only a handful of the original families, with Blandy holding the controlling stake. In 1989, Blandy invited the Symington family from Porto to partner in sales and marketing, a partnership that continues to this day and helps the Madeira Wine Company lead the Madeira wine trade.
