Very few producers, especially in Madeira wine production, have experienced a revolution in their history as significant as Barbeito’s. Going from a bulk wine supplier to a regional reference for Madeira wines is a remarkable achievement, given the strong competitors at the time. Everything began in 1991 when Ricardo Freitas joined the family business and, together with his Japanese partners Kinoshita, decided to transform Barbeito into one of the most important Madeira wine producers. In that same year another major change took place: for the first time, wine production was entrusted to a family member. Two years after Ricardo joined, he carried out his first harvest without external supervision, laying the groundwork for building a team that shares a common motto—producing quality wines with a distinctive style.
