In the nineteenth century, the catastrophic appearance of powdery mildew, downy mildew, and phylloxera forced growers to resort to intercropping vines with olive trees just to survive. In the twentieth century, the creation of cooperative wineries gave them new energy and helped revive the culture of viticulture and wine. It was in this context that AcR was founded in 1956 by a group of 14 growers, confirming Alentejo’s wine potential in the 1980s. Today the winery is one of the largest wine producers in the Alentejo region, bringing together about two hundred producers—roughly 95 % of the Redondo sub‑region. (Illustrative image only)
