This Private Selection red wine is made from Merlot, Touriga Nacional, and unidentified grape varieties grown on an old vine plot. After 18 months of maturation in French and American oak barrels and an additional 12 months in bottle, it displays a deep ruby colour and a concentrated aroma of blackberries, balanced by balsamic, tobacco and vanilla notes imparted by the barrel wood. On the palate it is full‑bodied, elegant, complex and persistent. Adega do Fundão, founded in 1949 by 30 viticulturists from the Beira Interior, is located in Cova da Beira—a vine‑growing area that dates back to the 2nd century and the Roman settlements of that era. The vines are planted along the Serra da Gardunha, allowing the production of grapes that give the wines an unrivalled richness, freshness and exuberance. (illustrative image only)
