This Castelão from Adega Mãe still needs a little encouragement, but it holds real promise. The colour is a mid-depth ruby, with aromas of red stone fruit – nothing too dramatic, of course – subtly spiced for a touch of elegance. On the palate, it’s fresh and the tannins are incredibly soft, almost whispering, enveloped in ripe fruit that lingers delightfully on the finish. A lovely match for a hearty beef dish – understated, as it should be.
