Alvaro Palacios is a leading figure of the movement called “The New Spain,” arguably the most famous Spanish winemaker worldwide, thanks to his wines—especially L’Ermita, considered Spain’s most important wine. Born into a “wine cradle,” he was one of nine children of the owner of Palacios Remondo and knew early on the vocation he would pursue. He studied in Bordeaux and interned at Château Pétrus, where Jean‑Pierre Moueix showed him the immense importance of crafting great wines. In 1989 he settled in a small area of clustered villages and century‑old vines perched on difficult-to-reach slate slopes, and in 2000 he bought Finca Dofi, launching a lifelong project that has made him the most influential Spanish winemaker today.
