Very few producers, especially in the Madeira wine sector, have experienced a revolution in their history as significant as the one that occurred with Barbeito. To transition from a bulk wine supplier to becoming a benchmark in the Madeira wine region overnight is a remarkable feat, given the strong competitors at the time. Everything unfolded in 1991, when Ricardo Freitas joined the family business and, together with the Japanese Kinoshita, decided to transform Barbeito into one of the most important Madeira wine producers. That same year, another major change took place: for the first time, wine production became the responsibility of a family member. Two years after Ricardo entered the company, he completed his first harvest without external oversight, thereby laying the groundwork for building a team whose members all adhere to the same motto: produce quality wines with a distinctive style.
