The story of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports dating back 25 years after that discovery. On Madeira, vines are grown in small plots of land called “poios,” set on mountain slopes and often difficult to access, and supported by earth walls. The island’s unique soil, climate, production process and grape varieties give Madeira wine its unrivalled distinction over time. Thirty grape varieties are used for this fortified wine, with the most prized being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho and Malvasia. (The year of bottling may not match the accompanying illustration.)
