This “Bons Ares” from Casa Ramos Pinto is a delightful reminder that the Douro Superior still has a few tricks up its sleeve. A boldly blended wine – primarily Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon – presenting as a gorgeous, intensely coloured bordeaux. Ripe strawberry and blackberry flavours dominate the nose, beautifully enhanced by hints of dark chocolate and spice, a testament to the extended French oak ageing. On the palate, the fruit’s exuberance is expertly balanced by a firm structure, finishing long and elegantly. A wine that, despite significant oak influence, relies on the exceptional terroir – granite soils and altitude – to maintain its youthful freshness and captivating complexity. Wonderful with roasted red meats or, if you prefer, a perfectly grilled fish.
