At the beginning of the nineteenth century, one of the most fascinating chapters in Portuguese wine was written with the launch of a wine that would become an icon, coveted by many, yet which has always been kept, by choice, out of the spotlight. Its creator, Alexandre de Almeida, imported the concept of combining luxury hospitality with a winery and a wine of its own, thus giving rise to the extraordinarily rare and historic Buçaco wines, produced at the beautiful Palácio do Bussaco, in the hills north of Coimbra. These are wines that have not adopted modern practices and that boast tremendous aging potential, capable of remaining in the bottle for decades. (image for illustrative purposes only)
