This Cabeça de Toiro Reserva, hailing from the Tejo, clearly took a crash course in “challenging the palate.” Initially bursting with those characteristic Sauvignon Blanc notes of rose and citrus, it quickly reveals a persistent acidity, thanks to the Fernão Pires, suggesting it won’t let you off the hook easily. The impressive 16.5 points awarded by Grandes Escolhas highlight its mineral intensity – think damask and white plum – which provides a fascinating counterpoint to the wine’s firm structure. Excellent with white meats or a nice grilled fish, perhaps?
