Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—colloquially known as the “Real Vinícola”—initially sparked confusion between the new and old Royal Companies, namely the new and the old Real Companhia dos Vinhos do Porto. Through the voice of the people and commercial slang, the Pombalina Real Companhia, established in 1756, began to be called “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted that name as its brand. The century‑old Real Vinícola, created under the patronage of the Marquis of Pombal, gradually became a purely patrimonial entity and was later acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
